New data paint an unpleasant picture of poverty in the US

New information paint an unsavory image of neediness in the US New information paint an upsetting image of destitution in the US On Sept. 12, the U.S. Evaluation Bureau discharged national neediness information for 2017.The feature was that 39.7 million individuals were poor in 2017. This works out to 12.3 percent of the populace or one of every eight Americans. Fortunately the U.S. neediness rate has fallen since 2010, when it hit 15.1 percent, and is presently where it was before the Great Recession. The terrible news is that destitution despite everything surpasses the 11.3 percent pace of 2000 and very numerous individuals are poor in a nation that is so rich. Another piece of terrible news is that things look far more atrocious in the event that we use what numerous researchers such as myself accept is a superior destitution measure.Who is poor?In 2017, ladies had higher neediness rates than men and minorities had higher destitution rates than non-Hispanic whites, for the most part since ladies gain not as much as men and minorities get lower compensation on normal than whites. For comparative reasons, gro wn-ups with lower instruction levels are bound to be poor. What's more, having an extra grown-up ready to win cash gives wedded couple families much lower destitution rates than family units headed by a solitary woman.Poverty likewise differs by age. For those 65 and over, the destitution rate tumbled from the 1960s until the 1990s, chiefly because of increasingly liberal Social Security benefits. From that point forward, it has stayed at around 10 percent. The destitution rate for prime-age grown-ups fell until around 1980. After 1980, it changed around 10 percent, ascending during downturns and falling during financial expansions.Child destitution, in any case, has been generally high in the U.S. since the late 1970s; it presently remains at 17.5 percent. For kids in a female-headed family, the destitution rate is almost 50 percent.Problems with estimating povertyThese information all originate from American families, utilizing strategy created in the mid 1960s by Mollie Orshansky of the Social Security Administration.Taking Agriculture Department information on least food prerequisites, Orshansky determined the yearly expense of a means food spending plan for groups of various sizes and types. Family spending examinations from the 1950s demonstrated that families burned through 33% of their pay on food. In this way, Orshanksy duplicated the expense of a base food spending plan for every family type by three to show up at their neediness limit. Edges rise every year dependent on expansion over the past year.Being helpless methods having deficient pay during the year to buy minimum essentials. The destitution rate is the level of the populace in this situation. The Orshansky neediness measure has been dependent upon considerable analysis. Unmistakably, neediness limits are not high. A solitary individual creation US$1,060 a month would not be viewed as poor. However, in many regions in the U.S., it's difficult to lease a spot for under $500 a month.Even if that is conceivable, this leaves just $20 per day for transportation, apparel, telephone, food and different costs. Orshansky's negligible food financial plan accepted that individuals shop admirably, never eat out and never give their kids treats. She really favored an increasingly liberal food spending plan to get duplicated by three; however she was overruled by senior government officials.Another issue is that the U.S. neediness measure disregards pay and finance charges. In the mid 1960s, the poor made good on negligible charges. Beginning in the late 1970s, low-salary families confronted a progressively impressive taxation rate, leaving them less cash to buy essential necessities. Then again, in the late 1990s, charge credits started to bring down the taxation rate on the poor. Finally, principles concerning what is required to be a good citizen shift after some time and spot. For instance, cellphones didn't exist up to this point. Childcare was a bit much for some during the 1950s or 1960s; yet when all grown-ups in a family work, it's essential.More awful newsTo manage this last issue, numerous researchers incline toward an overall proportion of destitution. The Luxembourg Income Study, an exploration association that breaks down salary circulation, believes family units to be poor if their pay, balanced for family size, falls under 50 percent of the middle pay of their nation for the specific year.Unlike the U.S. Evaluation Bureau, the Luxembourg Income Study takes away charges from pay when estimating destitution. It additionally includes government advantages, and makes information as practically identical as conceivable across countries. The outcome is a neediness rate that is commonly two to four rate focuses over the authority U.S. measure. From a universal viewpoint, the U.S. plainly does inadequately. As indicated by Luxembourg Income Study, the U.S. neediness rate was 17.2 percent in the mid-2010s â€" a lot higher than other created nations, for exa mple, Canada and the U.K.Things are far more atrocious with regards to kid destitution. In the U.S., kid neediness rates have outperformed 20 percent for a very long while, making it an anomaly among created nations. My research has distinguished two significant strategies answerable for this last outcome: kid stipends and paid parental leave. Kid remittances are fixed regularly scheduled installments to guardians made for every kid. Paid leave gives salary to guardians around the birth or reception of another youngster. The two arrangements are accessible in evolved countries all through the world â€" with the exception of the U.S. The more liberal these national advantages are, the lower the kid neediness rate.Considerable examination shows that growing up poor unfavorably influences kids' wellbeing, just as their scholarly and social turn of events. It brings down profit in adulthood, and decreases future expense incomes for the administration while expanding government social spe nding. The yearly expense of youngster neediness comes to around $1 trillion. In the mean time, each dollar spent lessening kid destitution is evaluated to yield $7 later on. This surpasses the arrival on most private investments.Steven Pressman, Professor of Economics, Colorado State UniversityThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons permit. Is Ageism Real Is There Anything You Can Do

Is Ageism Real Is There Anything You Can Do Is Ageism Real? Is There Anything You Can Do? Im in my early 50s and just got laid off. I havent had to look for a new job in 20 years! I hear stories about how hard it is for older Americans to find work. Are the stories true? Are people older than 50 discriminated against? How do I mitigate the age question? Of course, I look at it differently. I think my maturity and experience should be welcome at most companies. But Im not sure if employers look at it that way. Do you want the good news first or the bad news? Ok, let’s get the bad news over with. Bad news: Your generation is feeling the same pain as any other sub-segment of our population. Women feel they are not getting the jobs. Minorities, millennials, mid-career-changers, military veterans, and others feel that they, too, are at a disadvantage. I’ve even heard 35-year-old white men concerned that hiring managers prefer diversity! For you baby boomers (me, included!), it is true that many recruiters, screeners, and hiring managers are our children’s ages. Let’s face it; you just cannot come across as a complete Neanderthal! Good news: There are jobs out there, and hiring companies ARE hiring baby boomers along with other types of candidates. It is important that you select the right positions to apply to and present yourself as “current.” Here’s where to start first: Have a great LinkedIn profile, with a current, professional photo, and be active in LinkedIn groups and discussion boards. Learn how by taking the tutorials and seeking extra â€" free! â€" help on the internet. If you are not there, you don’t exist. And someone looking for job candidates with your background may just find you! Study the latest keywords used in your industry and function. Examine dozens of job descriptions, and see what language they use. Incorporate the latest words in your updated résumé and cover letter. Re-write your résumé. Odds are it is old and tired, and you simply added your latest job to the list. Let me guess. It’s filled with acronyms, weak on metrics, reads more like a list of job duties rather than identifying skills and experiences you have, and it doesn’t tell a story. There is so much help for you, again, on the internet. Write a great cover letter. I recommend a fresh, new “Candidate Packet” to stand out in a crowded field. At the very minimum, you need a new Cover Letter that talks to them about them. The days are gone when your cover letter is filled with “I, I, I, me, me, me.” Network. Yes, face-to-face. Go to industry and function events in your city. Examples include American Marketing Association if you are in marketing or the local technology association if that is your industry. Search your local Business Journal for a list of business events. Get fit. Yes, you heard it from me, “the Jillian Michaels of Careers.” Get in shape, buy a new interview outfit, carry a pad and paper to all meetings, come prepared, sit up straight, and more. Sorry, the mom in me just slipped out! The interview team is watching how you WOULD interact with team members, customers, partners, and executives if they hired you. So every move you make is an example of YOU as an employee.

Want To Work In A Role With Diversity Try A Development Program

Need To Work In A Role With Diversity Try A Development Program Need To Work In A Role With Diversity? Attempt A Development Program After Graduation Jennifer realized she needed a profession in promoting. It was, all things considered, what she studied and the focal point of her alumni program. Be that as it may, she realized that individuals who become pioneers require something other than one sort of experience and information to arrive. Getting a new line of work after graduation that offered that sort of decent variety of experience, individuals, and points of view wasn't simple, either. At that point Jen found out about Citizens Bank's Leadership Development Programs. I had a college degree in advertising and I was presently seeking after my MBA, so I was searching for something that had a rotational angle with the goal that I could study different territories of business notwithstanding showcasing, she says. The program joined every last bit of her interests: network, learning, andâ€"obviously â€" advertising. Obviously, she landed the position. Be that as it may, what precisely is an administration advancement program â€" and how did its assorted variety of chances, introduction, and individuals offer Jen such a brilliant future? We addressed her to discover. What Is A Leadership Development Program? Residents Bank's LDPs are rotational projects for late graduates that offer the chance to gain from a record of divisions, chiefs, coaches, classes, and duties. For Jen, that implied endeavor four, three-month revolutions over the Digital Marketing, Operations, Retail, and Consumer Strategy divisions. It likewise implied being appointed an official guide, preparing close by her partner of program associates, and handling significant activities over the business. It was altogether different from some other passage level jobs that I was investigating, Jen says, refering to the rotational viewpoint, the way that you have presentation to officials directly out of the entryway, and the systems administration opportunity even past the program. The objective toward the finish of the program was to improve as an expert, with full information on the organization and the abilities for a position of authority. We were relegated official coaches toward the start of the program, Jen clarifies. My guide was Lamont Young, who is the Head of Digital Marketing here, which is eventually the association I wound up revealing into. Along these lines, he I despite everything have that coach/mentee relationship where I can go to him for counsel. There was additionally introduction to different officials who ran the program, which was something Jen said was one of a kind regarding the program. In the event that you needed to have a discussion or gain more from a senior head, all you needed to do was inquire. Another significant mainstay of their turn of events (and their work) was the activities to which they were doled out. Something that Citizens does as a feature of being in the advancement program is that you chip away at a task with associates in various improvement programs, she clarifies. It was extremely incredible to have the option to work with cross-utilitarian groups and meet new individuals outside of this office also. She additionally got the chance to work nearby individuals in her Consumer Banking LDP associate, and those connections ended up being the absolute most grounded she made at the organization. We do a great deal of systems administration. We do chip in occasions together. We have official Lunch and Learns together, even as yet being out of the program for a couple of years, she says. We're a quite affectionate gathering. When were all in a similar office, well go out for beverages or lunch. Incredible companions likewise make extraordinary associates, Jen says: Having a partner is magnificent on the grounds that you have somebody to depend on well despite everything ping each other now if were chipping away at a venture and we imagine that their experience would be useful. The Program Made Her The Perfect Candidate For Her Dream Job â€" Which Citizens Offered Her Perhaps the greatest issue numerous ongoing graduates face is that they just need more understanding to fit the bill for the employments they truly need. The Citizens LDP gave Jen years of experience and improvement in only a year. Also, this aided Jen make herself the ideal possibility for her fantasy work on the Digital Marketing group. We took a shot at various undertakings, so when I was in Digital Marketing, I made a showcasing plan, which is something I knew about in school, she says. In any case, in the Retail pivot, we invested energy really with the bleeding edge partners, so it was incredible to see that experience. Its one thing to find out about difficulties that the branch partners are confronting when youre on the corporate side, however when you really experience it and can interface with the client, that is important knowledge, she says. More than being energizing, it was the ideal experience for an advertiser and a business proficientâ€"she saw both the difficulties looked by individuals in the bank and the victories they had the option to bring individuals. Close to the finish of the program, we as a whole meeting for open employments, Jen says. Furthermore, given her experience and execution, recruiting her was an easy decision. I wound up back in Digital, which is the place I truly needed to be. Im as of now on the web based life group and have been for around two years now, she says. More workers eyeing new jobs

More specialists peering toward new openings More specialists peering toward new jobsPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie ChunMore Australians are searching for new openings, or pondering searching for new openings than at any other time, as per another overview. The review of 4500 representatives from various occupations and enterprises in Australasia has discovered that between August 2009 and February 2010, more laborers than any time in recent memory started searching for a new position or contemplated doing as such. Thirty eight percent of laborers said they were effectively searching for a new position â€" twofold the extent from the previous a half year â€" and 58 percent were 'considering their options'.One in six specialists really went after a new position â€" 64 percent more than among February and August 2009, when the monetary downturn was even under the least favorable conditions and individuals were clinging to their employments for dear life. Many organizations needed to force intense measures to climate the financi al emergency a year ago, with the presentation of nine-day fortnights and pay rise freezes â€" yet it appears that these endurance strategies are currently causing a laborer reaction, as per Grant Sexton, CEO of Leadership Management Australasia, which directed the study. 'Bosses understood that they required staff ready for when the economy returned up. The issue is that the economy is recouping yet administrators are concentrating on reestablishing their benefits as opposed to remunerating their workers. Representatives not just have the right to partake in the products of the recuperation, with financing costs on the ascent again as the economy warms up, they really need to,' says Sexton. Eighty seven percent of representatives really need to remain with their manager, yet just 64 percent accept this is conceivable on account of an apparent absence of professional stability and opportunity in their current position. As per the review, employer stability is the second most signifi cant effect on working environment execution, and open doors for profession improvement is the second most significant factor for remaining with an association. In any case, more than 30 percent of workers had gotten practically zero confirmation from their manager about the future, driving numerous to consider escaping before they are transported out. The disappointment of numerous businesses to discuss the future with their staff demonstrates an absence of comprehension of workers' points of view and needs. Supplanting representatives acquires an extraordinary expense, so this ongoing pattern for laborers to look somewhere else is stressing for bosses and means they should ponder improving their work environment correspondences. For work searchers, be that as it may, this could be uplifting news as managers offer more pay and motivating forces to both enlist and hold staff. 5 Tips For Building A Productive Team - Work It Daily

5 Tips For Building A Productive Team - Work It Daily Perhaps the most ideal approaches to assemble a fruitful business is to utilize stunning individuals. Sounds basic right? All things considered, not actually. At times, it takes somewhat more to get the best from your group. It's not just about employing the ideal individuals - you additionally need to develop a situation that will permit them to flourish and develop with your business. In the event that you aren't doing the most you can to guarantee that your colleagues are cheerful, roused, and really engaged with the business, at that point you are doing an insult to yourself, your group, and, to top it all off, your clients. Tips For Building A Productive Team Building a beneficial group isn't as hard as you may might suspect. Here are five things you ought to do with your workers to build profitability, center, and generally speaking group prosperity: 1. Welcome Them It's very simple to overlook that the individuals working for you are only that - individuals. As a group administrator, attempt to associate with each and every individual who works for you as regularly as could be expected under the circumstances and require the push to find out about who they are as people. Figure out how to value all that they are accomplishing for you and I promise it they will start to take note. I Think I Can

I Think I Can Do you recollect the narrative of the Little Engine That Could? Envision my unexpected when my Star-Wars-adoring, DS Nintendo-toting child, carried that book home with a glimmer of fervor in his eyes, proclaiming this was an incredible story. That little blue motor acknowledged the task and strongly pulled the toys past that certain point to the great young men and young ladies on the opposite side of the mountain. Do you likewise recall the comedian and the toys? They showed as much constancy and industriousness as the little blue motor. They knew where they needed to go and precisely why they needed to arrive. They were amiable and direct in their solicitations. (They sound like great job searchers, dont they?) They were dismissed by a gleaming new traveler motor, a cargo motor, and old tired motor. These bystanders censured the urgent, kind plays with the words I wont pull any semblance of you. This story is as much about the narrow-mindedness of those different motors for what it's worth about the achievement of the little motor that could. We as a whole are confronted with the chance to help other people. How frequently do we set aside the effort to have any kind of effect?

Perception is Reality So Be Authentic - Work It Daily

Observation is Reality So Be Authentic - Work It Daily Straightforwardness, truth and being genuine… extremely popular now and as it ought to be. This is anything but another situation concerning deals, promoting, publicizing and PR, it's simply individuals are paying attention to it much more now, while picking who they need to adjust themselves to and who they need to put resources into. The web, on the web and online life stages have constrained this. There are such a large number of ruthless, corrupt and untrustworthy individuals going after individuals that it's truly dependent upon me to be legitimate and up to us all not take individuals at their assumed worth right away. We as a whole need to invest energy assembling the like, know and trust factor. I have consistently been entranced with the expression discernment is reality since it's so evident. What individuals see is the thing that they think, and it depends on what they see, hear and think. Thus, our correspondence of and introducing of ourselves really face to face and online is the best practice from the earliest starting point. There is no away from of this expression that I could discover, other than it originating from the Gestalt School of brain science and thought from Germany in the 1920's. Wikipedia: Gestalt brain science or gestaltism (German: Gestalt â€" embodiment or state of an element's finished structure) of the Berlin School is a hypothesis of psyche and mind setting; the operational rule of Gestalt is that the cerebrum is all encompassing, equal, and simple, with self-sorting out inclinations. The Gestalt impact is the structure creating capacity of our faculties, especially concerning the visual acknowledgment of figures and entire structures rather than only an assortment of straightforward lines and bends. How would we fabricate that brand and marking legitimacy? Brand Authenticity is about that you are who state you state you are reliably after some time. Marking Consistency is the means by which you exhibit and are an intensity of case of what your identity is and what you state you will do in real life. Brand Leadership is your promise to unmistakable exercises to make your locale and the world you live and work in a superior spot. Marking Legacy is the means by which you show after some time the fundamental belief of your image and recount to this through your image story. Some incredible models I can think about that practiced this brand and marking heritage are: Comedic virtuoso Bob Hope who engaged our people in the military for quite a long time with his USO visits. Comedic virtuoso Jerry Lewis and his Jerry's children. Oprah's 25 years of administration bringing troublesome and already implicit about issues and difficulties to the general population through her Oprah TV Show stage and her school for young ladies in Africa. Cocoa-Cola's organization with the Olympics and Special Olympics. On the off chance that discernment is reality, at that point why not do it directly from the earliest starting point and not sit around idly on a brief, bogus, wrong intention crusade that won't just bomb however brand you always as a fake? In the present world that would be an extreme and conceivably unsalvageable picture to fix. 15 Nerve-racking Job Interview Questions and How to Answer Them

15 Nerve-racking Job Interview Questions and How to Answer Them 1K Preparation is the zen of the job interview. This is a guest post by Reese Jones. It’s the final judgment. Each word you blurt out can decide the next years of your life. This is how an important job interview usually plays out. For some, the stress alone could be their one way ticket to rejection and unemployment. For others who came prepared and confident, success in almost guaranteed.eval While most job interviews can be rough, some are just plain nerve-racking. One fine example of an interview from hell is the hiring process of McKinsey Company. According to job database Glassdoor, the company starts off with a bang; asking the applicant a question straight out of a master’s degree thesis defense!eval Below are some of the most terrifyingly difficult job interview questions and how to answer them. Free bonus: The One Job Interview Resource You’ll Ever Need is a handy reference to help you prepare for any kind of job interview. Download it free now 1) Why you, of all people? This is a staple one, and applicants usually overlook this question. As an applicant, your main job is to focus on selling all your credentials. Review the job description and memorize the qualities the company likes. Stealthily align your personality with these qualities, but don’t sound too rehearsed. Monster.com mentioned that the wrong way to answer this is along “because I need the job.” The correct answer will be: “I want the job because I know I am capable,” then support your claim. 2) Tell me more about yourself. This should be an opening question, designed for the human resources manager to assess your personality more than your skills. First impression definitely last in this setup. A safe way to answer this is to mention all of the four life areas: your childhood, education, past work, and recent opportunities related to the industry. Don’t talk too much about specifics here since you are being judged on how you answer than what you say. 3) Why did you choose our company? Preparation is the key. TargetJobs.co.uk tells us that this is actually a multi-layered question. You have to answer these implied inquiries: What do you know about the company? Are you interested in the industry? How? Other than monetary compensation, what drives you to work? These are basically easier questions to digest; and answering these three in a single speech can work very well in your favor. 4) Describe your personality. Ian Ruddy, Head of Human Resource Operations at Telefonica’s O2 UK, said that this question is asked to their applicants because personality is important when considering employees. There are many ways to not over-hype yourself while remaining positive. Use (positive) adjectives such as easy-going, methodical, motivated, punctual, and reliable. 5) Will you leave after five years of employment and no promotion? The correct way to answer is to mention that you are an eternal learner. Say that you are ambitious, but you understand the office setup. “Different companies promote people at different rates, and I’m pretty confident that working for you will keep me motivated and mentally stimulated for several years to come,” is how Vicky Oliver, author of 301 Smart Answers to Tough Interview Questions, would answer this one. 6) Why did you choose to go to your university? Always start by mentioning the quality of education of your alma mater. Drop the names of famous professors that might be recognized by your interviewer. Tell that you considered many different campuses but ultimately picked the one you thought would offer you the best education for this particular industry. 7) Where do you see yourself in five years? This is a tricky question. What the interviewer is actually asking is if you are looking for a position or a long-term career. The safest way to answer this is to say that you see yourself excelling in the position you are applying, and drop the company’s name as a catalyst for your ambition. Career expert Thea Kelly’s answer would be that “I am currently exploring my career path, but I do know it will involve this industry, so this job is a great fit. I admire this company because [insert well-researched company fact] and I see myself continuing to develop my career here.” 8) How do you fit a giraffe in a refrigerator? Ah, this question is infamous. Questions like these are along the same line of “How many jet planes are flying on the world right now?” and “Estimate the number of tickets sold during the Olympics this year.” It actually does not matter if your answer is on-point. What matters is how you solve this seemingly impossible problem. The key here is to let the interviewer inside your brain. Tell him or her exactly how you would solve the problem. 9) Are you willing to travel far for the job? If you are, then don’t hesitate to show your enthusiasm. Natural travel junkies should have no problem with this question. Otherwise, be careful in mentioning your dislike for travel. A blatant ‘no’ will surely make you lose the job. 10) Which influences led you to this industry? Be candid. Tell stories of your youth and how you were inspired by a person, event, or object. Tell them that you have been pursuing this dream ever since you could understand (if true). Interviewers love to listen to entertaining and insightful anecdotes. This is not very difficult to answer, but many still fall flat and sound fake by answering clichés such as ‘myself’, ‘God’, or a global figure like Gandhi or Bill Gates. 11) How do you handle office conflict? This is an example of a behavioral question. Hiring managers love to ask a couple of these during interviews. The best response would be to cite a concrete example. Tell a story of how you handled conflict in the past and how you were able to amicably resolve it. “Conflict questions are common because everybody wants to hire a good ‘team player’,” says New York University adjunct professor Pamela Skillings. 12) What didn’t you like with your past employer? Never, in a million years, talk negatively about your past company or employer. With a question like this, you have the added task of turning a negatively-loaded question into a positive answer. Start by complimenting the company, and segue into the little stuff that ‘annoyed’ you rather than ‘irked’ you. If possible, try and make a general statement towards the tasks rather than the management or people. “I was tasked with too much paperwork when I feel like I would grown and excel more when interacting with people,” can be a great answer. 13) Why do you want to leave your current job? (Or: why did you leave your last job?) Like question number 12, don’t talk negatively about your working conditions. Tell them that you look to broaden your horizon despite enjoying your current work, but be honest. 14)How do you define success? Immediately start by telling the interviewer how you evaluate success. Different people have different perceptions of success, but always link your answer to the office environment. Meeting goals, growth, and skill mastery are great substitutes to typical answers like ‘money’ and ‘wealth.’ 15) Do you know any jokes? Always prepare one. Never enter a job interview without a ready-to-go harmless joke in your pocket. Not delivering anything is worse than a bad joke. Winter is the time to look for internships

Winter is the time to look for internships Students who want a job or internship in June need to start looking in the winter. Those who wait until spring to search set themselves up to be bottom feeders in the job market. The hardest part of a search is starting. Here is a guide to help you start sooner. Internships Companies that are popular and prestigious offer internships that are snapped up by spring. An intern offers free or underpaid labor in exchange for a line on a resume. Its a raw deal, but dont underestimate that line. At the end of college, students with great summer internships are in a separate category than everyone else. Most companies hire full-time staff from their pool of summer interns. Of course, an internship is not a sure bet to success, but its a sure bet that you have a chance to prove yourself in an industry where you think youll be happy. Real-Life Jobs Look, I dont want to be the one spreading this news, but someones got to do it: Unless youre planning to go to grad school, or planning to camp out at your parents home indefinitely, running an effective job hunt is as important as getting good grades during your last year in college. Hunting for a job is a full-time job. You need to send resumes out regularly, scour job listings and company listings, conduct regular soul-searching missions, and you need to leave time and energy to stress about your lack of success in all these areas. You can take time now, during school to do this, or you can wait until June. In June, all the good jobs will be taken because the students obsessed with getting a great job start hunting in the winter, and top companies accommodate those students. Youre going to have to suffer through a job hunt sooner or later, so why not do it when there are still great entry-level jobs to be had? Your Strategy Find companies youd like to work for. Some companies have very structured application processes on their web site. Others will have very little. For the latter, find the name of the human resource manager and send a cover letter and resume asking for a summer internship or a job. If you get a job from a mere 40 resumes, you will be beating all the odds. You should send out 100, but I dont want to overwhelm you. And hey, dont forget all your parents friends and your friends parents friends. Most colleges have a career center. Use it. My 21-year-old brother wrote a letter to his roommates dad asking for an internship at his pharmaceutical company. My brother ended the letter with, I look forward to your speedy reply. Quick quiz: What is wrong with his ending? Answer: This is the way you sign a letter to someone who reports to you and is in trouble and needs pushing around. If you did not know that answer you should never send a letter out without a trained counselor reading it first. If you did know the answer you should still go to your career center. The first rule of successes in business is to know how to leverage available help. The real world is not filled with career centers waiting for your visit. So go there now, while you can.

Whats Important Really Important In a Job Interview - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

What’s Important â€" Really Important In a Job Interview - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career So, finally, the phone rings and the caller ID displays the name of a company you sent your résumé to. The caller is from the company’s human resources department and wants to schedule you for an in-person interview. Fantastic, this is music to your ears, but what now? Are you prepared? Do you have time to get ready? More important, do you understand the interview process and in what context the company wants to explore your candidacy? Plus, also remember that such interviews are competitive. In other words, your résumé provided some clues about you that may fit the company’s need, the company’s culture, the skills sought, and so on, but in addition to exploring hiring possibilities with you, the company does so with several additional candidates as well. So now the question is, What can you do to maximize your chances? Know your relationship with the interviewer From the moment you hung up the phone with the person arranging the interview, this upcoming face-to-face meeting becomes the focal point of your next few days. Such is not the case, however, with the person who’s going to conduct the interview. For that person, the excitement about meeting with you is minimalâ€"sometimes even to the point that the interviewer might not be prepared to conduct the interview. Sometimes the interviewer does not have with him a copy of your résuméâ€"or even the job description!â€"and will just wing it, as they say. On top of that, you think that well-rehearsed answers to common interview questions are very convincing. Well, think again. The interviewer knows you came in to sell yourself and knows to expect from you many self-proclaimed adjectives about how great you are. But do you really think the interviewer believes everything you say? Well, maybe some of itâ€"and probably more of it if you have factual examples and you describe them as viewed by others. What’s actually important to the interviewer? This is where the candidate is at a disadvantage. Don’t forget that the hiring manager initiated the quest for the “ideal candidate” because there’s a problem to solve. It’s most likely the hiring manager (or interviewer) did not agree to meet with you because of your beautiful handsâ€"well, unless you’re a professional model and the company is selling, say, wristwatches. Seriously, your focus should be on identifying what the hiring manager needs done. And most likely, that information does not get revealed even via a candid dialogue. The thing is that job descriptions are typically rather general by not highlighting the specifics that are in fact the driving forces behind the hiring process for the positions advertised. Additionally, a large survey conducted among human resources personnel and hiring managers exposed the fact that 100 percent of them were looking for candidate fit into their companies’ cultures. And 82 percent of interviewers said they look for passion and excitement in candidates. So, based on this information, you may think your past speaks very well and you’d, therefore, be a shoo-in for the position. Not so, says the survey, unless you fit into the culture and you exhibit passion and excitement while interviewing. As a reader, you may have your own opinion. I’d welcome your comment.
